Team USA and Bruins star Charlie McAvoy will miss the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game Thursday after being hospitalized with an “upper-body injury,” Boston announced Tuesday morning.
McAvoy has an infection that stemmed from a minor injury, according to Daily Faceoff.
The 27-year-old landed in Massachusetts General Hospital on Monday during the Americans’ 2-1 loss to the Sweden and is being evaluated by the Bruins’ head physician, the team said in a statement.

McAvoy, an alternate captain for the squad, did not play Monday due to what USA coach and father-in-law Mike Sullivan dubbed an “upper-body injury.”
McAvoy, a Long Beach, N.Y. native, tallied 19:45 of ice time in team USA’s 6-1 win over Finland in its opener on Feb. 13 and then registered 19:27 of action in the 3-1 win over Canada on Saturday.
He delivered a memorable hit to Connor McDavid during the triumph over Canada, rocking him against the boards while the Canadians held a 1-0 advantage in the first period.
Team USA tied the score shortly after and never looked back.

McAvoy missed seven games due to an upper-body injury before the tournament started, only returning to action on Jan. 30, per the Bruins’ website.
He also received a left shoulder arthroscopic stabilization procedure in 2022, per NBC.
Entering the tournament, McAvoy noted his appreciation for having the chance to play for his father-in-law, having married his daughter, Kiley.
The couple have a son together, Rhys.
“I thought about that, really just how amazing it is,” McAvoy told the Bruins’ website.
“Me and my wife, with Rhys, we just brought a son into the world. His dad got to play for his grandpa. How incredible that is and just how rare.
“Really it’s something that none of us ever could have dreamed of. There’s no crystal ball that would have shown us that. It’s just amazing and I know the pride that I’ve seen in my wife and just how proud she is of her dad and of me and it’s just extremely special.”
The Americans are also dealing with injuries sustained by Matthew Tkachuk, Brady Tkachuk and Auston Matthews heading into their rematch with Canada.
