It’s always interesting — and bordering on hilarious — when a New York fan base trashes a standout and beloved player after he signs with another team via free agency.
Juan Soto joins recent bold-faced New York examples such as Jacob deGrom, Saquon Barkley and John Tavares as superstars who were treated as “he’s-dead-to-me” turncoats for signing elsewhere, with the one-year Yankees slugger and OBP machine perhaps generating the current vitriol because he left for a $765 million windfall from the crosstown Mets.
DeGrom similarly was deemed disloyal to the Mets, when he wasn’t denigrated as fragile, after he signed with the Rangers in 2023 following multiple injuries.
Many Giants supporters turned on Barkley, a certifiable MVP candidate this season, because he had the gall to sign with the division rival Eagles, even though Philly offered him far more than Big Blue was willing to do.
