TRENDING RUMORS
– Arsenal and Barcelona are interested in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt, according to Sky Sports Deutschland’s Patrick Berger. Both clubs are reportedly monitoring the situation of the 29-year-old, who is looking to leave the Bundesliga to join a club abroad at the end of his contract this summer. Brandt is yet to begin talks with any club regarding a potential move after reportedly turning down approaches from the Premier League in January.
– Real Madrid are attentive to the contract situation of Manchester City midfielder Rodri, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano on the “Here We Go Podcast”. The 29-year-old is expected to make a decision on his future at the Etihad soon, and it is reported that Madrid, who are keen to reinforce their midfield following Luka Modric’s move to AC Milan last year, could step up their pursuit if Rodri decides against signing an extension in the summer, when he will enter the final year of his current deal.
– Barcelona are “confident” of winning the race to sign Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni. TEAMtalk reports that the Blaugrana are leading the pursuit of the 26-year-old, who is also on the radar of Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal. Liverpool have reportedly identified him as a potential future successor to Virgil van Dijk, but with the Serie A club aware of growing interest in his signature, they are planning to offer him a new contract that could secure his future at the San Siro until the summer of 2030.
– Tottenham Hotspur are willing to part ways with defender Cristian Romero amid interest from Atlético Madrid, according to the Daily Telegraph. Spurs are reportedly planning a major overhaul of their squad across the next three transfer windows, and the 27-year-old is one of several who could be moved on. Meanwhile, Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Juventus are keen on right-back Djed Spence, 25, and it is believed that he could be signed for a fee of €20 million.
– Manchester United are looking at Nottingham Forest midfielder Ibrahim Sangaré, reports Football Insider. United are said to be weighing up a move in the summer for the 28-year-old, who has impressed scouts with his performances in the Premier League this season, but any deal could hinge on whether they first acquire other players higher up on their shortlist. Sangare has made 32 appearances across all competitions for the Tricky Trees in the current campaign, while the Old Trafford hierarchy have also been linked with his teammate and midfield partner Elliot Anderson.
EXPERT TAKE
ESPN columnist Graham Hunter explains how Real Madrid having a gaping, Rodri-sized hole in their midfield:
In short, Madrid lack someone like Rodri.
Over these two matches, it’s going to be like a dose of salt rubbed fiercely into a raw Real Madrid wound that City are once again governed by a man in the prime of his career, a man born in the Spanish capital, a Ballon d’Or-winning organizing midfielder who has captained Spain to victory in the UEFA Nations League and the European Championship — and, worse still for agitated, unsatisfied Real Madrid season-ticket holders, a man whose all-time idol remains one of Los Blancos’ greatest ever players or coaches: Zinedine Zidane.
If you used computer-aided-design to formulate the precise talent, height, experience, temperament, hunger for trophies, attitude, technical repertoire, mentality, vision, experience and nationality of the player that the 15-time European champions desperately need now, and going forward, the player that any half-decent system would produce is the Manchester City and Spain captain. How ironic.
