As a reminder, the details of the trip are below. The two spring training games have been announced as Yankees vs. Red Sox and Yankees vs. Phillies, with games on March 18 and 19 of the five-day trip.

Piniella is a great pick for this trip in particular, as he knows just what these young players are in for when they get off the plane and hit the field in Florida.
“The toughest thing about spring training is you have to cut players,” Piniella said. “It’s not easy to bring in a young player and send him out to the minors. I’m a good example of that. I got sent out five different times before I finally made the big leagues.”

He was ‘Sweet Lou.’ He personified the fiery, base-throwing manager. He was a key star in the George Steinbrenner orbit.”

It featured excerpts of his book, penned by Piniella and Maury Allen and appropriately named, “Sweet Lou.” Allen was a sportswriter, actor, and most importantly to us, a beloved New York Post sports columnist.
