Why the Yankees couldn’t afford the international scouting status quo

Given their recent track record, perhaps it is not the worst thing that the Yankees’ top projected international signing this year backed out of his agreement or that next year’s reportedly has, too.

That is why Mario Garza’s hire as the director of international scouting is more important than how long it took to happen, two-plus months after the Yankees let go of longtime boss Donny Rowland — a window in which top shortstop Wandy Asigen spurned the Yankees for the Mets when the current signing period opened on Jan. 15.

“Just looking for better outcomes,” general manager Brian Cashman said this week. “So [Garza] is going to reinvent that department, and I look forward to seeing where it takes us. But the end result, we’re looking to get really positive results.”

Cashman did not get into specifics about what a reinvention might look like, but the Yankees certainly could use it.
