An Australian mom has posted to TikTok in shock after receiving a Moana doll that was a little bit different than she expected.
The doll, which she purchased as a Click and Collect at her local Myer, was supposed to be a singing Moana 2 doll, with songs from the new movie.
But, after having some doubts about the box, she couldn’t believe what she was hearing when the music began to play.
“I am actually so confused!”
A Perth mom, on TikTok as @taylacespedes, has taken to TikTok this week to unbox a unique-looking Moana 2 doll.
“We bought this Moana doll for my daughter for her birthday, ‘Singing Moana Doll, 38cm’, $85,” she said.
“We got the Moana doll as per normal, and I was taking her out of the box, and my daughter was so excited to play with her, and upon taking her out of the box, I noticed that it said Vaiana 2 on the box.
“I said to my husband, ‘That’s a bit strange, Vaiana 2. Who’s that?’. On all the things, it says, ‘Vaiana sings to you’, but it came with all the things exactly the same as what came on the website.”
As she removed the doll from its box, the mom showed the music that played on demo mode – which sounded like the soundtrack from the movie. But, when she turned it on properly, a version of one of the songs played – but she was singing in another language.
“I don’t even know what language that is,” she said.
“I am actually so confused!”
“This is wild!”
Commenters on the video were just as shocked as she was, saying they understood the poster’s shock and frustration.
“HAHAHA I can’t!! This is hilarious but also upsetting bc it’s so expensive and not what you expected,” one commenter wrote.
“Hahaha this is wild! I am subscribed for the next installment please,” said another.
However, some weren’t as fazed, saying the mom should be using the mistake as an opportunity.
“It might be useful to get her interested in other languages,” said one commenter.
“Your daughter is at the perfect age where she learns so fast she‘s gonna be singing in all those languages in no time,” another agreed.
“She’ll eventually be able to sing along in those languages. Even if it’s just a bit. It’s more special than anything =) srsly don’t see a problem. Quite the opposite,” said a third.
“The dolls is for your daughter, not you. it’s not that deep, your daughter won’t care if it speaks another language, she is a child. she will most likely laugh at it and still play with the doll,” a fourth said.
She’s called Vaiana because…
However, the most shocking part of the saga was why the doll was speaking in another language, and had a different name.
Thankfully, the TikTok made it to viewers in Europe, who said that the name Vaiana is used there instead of Moana.
“In some countries, Moana is actually called Vaiana! I’m French and for us, it’s Vaiana,” said one commenter.
“That’s German and in Germany, Moana is called Vaiana. I don’t know why we changed the name. the first part of her singing was German but the second one I don’t know,” another agreed.
“It’s the EXACT same as Moana! It’s just that in some countries Moana is named Viviana. She’s singing in Swedish and in Sweden it’s correct name,” said another person.
But, the reason why is more spicy than you might think.
“In Europe, she’s called Vaiana/Viana because some country had an adult movie star called Moana, so they changed her name so when kids looked this Disney movie up, they wouldn’t be traumatized,” one commenter explained.
“They have since recalled them”
After posting the video, the creator said she was contacted by Myer, making a follow-up video to put the rumors to rest.
“Myer has been in contact with Kidspot to say that they actually received a whole shipment of French dolls… and it was put out on display as Moana 2,” she said.
“They have since recalled them all… Myer have been kind enough to say that they will just send us a new one.”
Kidspot reached out to Myer, who did not wish to comment on the story.
