Passengers aboard a Volaris flight were visited by a swarm of flying bugs last week — the second time in nearly a year that a plane with the same airline has been invaded by insects.
The bugs, which a passenger said were mosquitoes, took over the cabin of a flight headed from Morelia, Mexico to Los Angeles, California Sept. 8, Storyful reported.
But despite the “exorbitant amount of mosquitoes” inside the cabin, the flight took off as scheduled, passenger Jose Javier Suarez told Storyful.
Footage provided by Suarez shows the bugs crowding the ceiling in the back of the cabin as passengers boarded the aircraft.
An airline staff member took images of the bug invasion on her phone, but everyone seemed to remain calm.
Suarez said that the plane door was left open while they were likely refueling, which allowed the bugs to fly inside.
He added that since it is a rainy season, there tends to be a plethora of mosquitos, and they were drawn by the lights.
Suarez said the bugs “didn’t really bother him” after he wrapped himself up in a jacket and fell asleep. They were still visible when the plane landed in Los Angeles, he said.
Storyful has not verified if the bugs were in fact mosquitos.
This is not the first time the airline has been visited by itch-inducing visitors.
In October 2023, a Volaris flight was delayed several hours after the cabin was overrun by a swarm of mosquitos.
A viral video showed that infiltration, but it was unclear how they got inside the aircraft. Local media showed yet another similar mosquito infestation aboard a Volaris flight in 2019.
