Vietnam Airlines suspends 4 pilots after Boeing jet collides with parked Airbus on runway, slicing through tail fin

A Vietnam Airlines jet collided with a sister plane on the tarmac at Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport, and shocking video shows the moment it slices through the aircraft’s tail fin in a wild runway collision.

The collision occurred at approximately 2 p.m. Friday, when a Ho Chi Minh City-bound Boeing 787 was taxiing for takeoff and struck an Airbus A321, parked on the tarmac, waiting to depart for Dien Bien, according to VNExpress.

The 8-second video, without audio, shows the Boeing’s right wing carving through the tail stabilizer of the Airbus like a hot knife through butter.

Debris from both planes is seen scattered across the runway, according to the video, filmed by someone aboard the Boeing.

Vietnam Airlines has suspended the four pilots, two on each plane, in the wake of the accident, whose cause remains under investigation.

Preliminary findings suggest the Airbus was not parked correctly on the runway.

The Boeing damaged its wing tip in the incident. Replacement planes were eventually found to transport all 386 passengers from both damaged planes to their final destinations.

No one was injured.

An independent team hired by the airline will be investigating the accident, along with the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.

Vietnam Airlines did not respond to a request for comment.
