A 5.0 magnitude earthquake shook the coast of Northern California Wednesday night, rattling coastal communities across Humboldt County.
The offshore tremor struck at 8:56 p.m. roughly 69 miles west of Petrolia at a depth of approximately 6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Seismologists initially measured the event at preliminary magnitude 4.6 before quickly upgrading it to a 5.0.
The USGS has issued a Green Alert, indicating a low likelihood of casualties or structural damage.
Despite the offshore epicenter, light to weak shaking was felt across several regional communities, including Arcata, Garberville, McKinleyville, and Whitethorn. More than 120 residents have already submitted reports via the USGS “Did You Feel It?” portal.
Wednesday night’s tremor marks the strongest in a recent series of offshore shakes. Two separate 2.7-magnitude quakes were recorded in the same area on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
