A seemingly frightening moment ensued during a Delta Airlines flight from Detroit to New York’s LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday when the air traffic control tower alerted pilots to a reported rocket launcher on the ground.
Air traffic control radio from atc.com synced with the airplane’s flight path shows the report coming in as the plane nears the airport.
During the jet’s descent into LaGuardia at about 8:53 pm ET, the air traffic control tower said, “MANPAD alert issued at LaGuardia Airport at 0027. Use extreme caution.”
The pilot responded, “Could you explain what a MANPAD is?”
“Yeah, that’s a manned portable air defense system,” the air traffic controller said. “Yeah, it’s a basically was a report of a rocket launcher,” he added with a chuckle.
“There was a report by the Port Authority Police. They said by, I believe, Terminal C. We’ve had conflicting reports, but nothing has been an issue as of yet,” the controller added.
The pilot remained cool and calm, responding, “Okay, Delta 2604. Thanks for the information.”
The controller confirmed about two minutes later that it was a “noncredible threat.”
