A gunman opened fire with an illegally modified automatic weapon during a car sideshow early Saturday morning in the Ford City Mall parking lot on Chicago’s Southwest Side, killing a 21-year-old man from Indiana.
The shooting unfolded around 2:50 a.m. on Saturday, as drivers performed donuts and other stunt maneuvers in the lot near the Ross store, drawing a large crowd.
The incident occurred during an illegal “sideshow,” a gathering where drivers take over parking lots or streets for reckless stunts, and often, violence.
Videos circulating on social media captured the rapid bursts of gunfire and the panic that followed.

The victim, identified as Martin Isaac Cantu Murillo of South Bend, Indiana, was standing outside when the shooter approached and opened fire. He was struck in the head and rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead just before 10 a.m.
Chicago police recovered approximately 25 shell casings from the scene, confirming the use of a fully automatic weapon.
Police noted these sideshows have become a persistent problem in parts of Chicago.
The gunman, described as wearing all black clothing with a hood pulled over his head, fled the area in a red SUV, according to a report from CWB Chicago.
No arrests have been reported as of Sunday afternoon.
No official motive has been released, and police have not confirmed whether the victim was targeted or caught in crossfire.
