A UC Berkeley camp counselor accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl while she slept in a campus dormitory has been slapped with eight felony charges, authorities said.
Quaylin Wesley, 27, a former youth basketball trainer, substitute teacher and Cal graduate, was arrested after the alleged attack during a summer camp hosted at the university on Saturday.
According to The Scanner, the girl was in a bed in a UC Berkeley residence hall when Wesley — who was serving as an overnight counselor — allegedly fondled her while she pretended to be asleep.
The suspect fled the room when one of the girl’s roommates rolled over in bed, but allegedly returned multiple times and attempted to assault her again.
The child eventually tried to wake her roommates, ran into a bathroom and alerted another camp counselor, according to the report.
UC Berkeley declined to identify the camp or its location, citing the victim’s age and the ongoing investigation.
University police first received a report around 1:15 a.m. of an attempted sexual assault inside a residence hall, according to a WarnMe emergency notification. The incident was formally reported to officers at about 2 a.m.
After investigating, UC Berkeley police arrested Wesley and booked him into Alameda County jail.
“The incident was initially reported to UCPD as an attempted sexual assault in a residence hall. Through subsequent investigation, UCPD determined that the incident was a completed sexual assault, rather than an attempted one,” a follow-up WarnMe message stated.
Wesley graduated from UC Berkeley in 2021 with a degree in social welfare.
His LinkedIn profile says he most recently worked as a physical education teacher for third- through fifth-grade students at the Francophone Charter School of Oakland. The page also lists him as a former youth basketball trainer, high school English teacher, substitute elementary school teacher and first-grade teacher.
“With a strong foundation in classroom instruction and coaching, I am committed to fostering student success and bridging educational gaps. My goal is to provide resources and opportunities that empower students, creating a positive impact on their academic and personal growth,” his LinkedIn description states.
Prosecutors filed eight felony counts against Wesley on Tuesday. He remains jailed at Santa Rita Jail on $425,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse.
