The tragic death of a Cal State Fullerton freshman has exposed the underground fraternity now linked to the teen’s demise that was booted from the school years ago.
An 18-year-old college freshman named Anthony Joseph Blas died on September 13 after he was dropped off unresponsive at St. Jude Medical Center suffering from what appeared to be an alcohol-related medical episode.
Blas is believed to have attended an off-campus fraternity event hosted by Delta Chi, a group that lost its recognition over hazing allegations in 2021.
Delta Chi was banned from the university over hazing and “use, possession, manufacture, or distribution” of illegal drugs and alcohol, according to CSUF’s Student Organization Conduct Status.
“Following the closure of the chapter, Delta Chi has proactively worked with university officials to make students aware that no active Delta Chi chapter exists at California State University, Fullerton,” the fraternity’s national office said to the OC Register.
“Anthony’s family deserves answers, and all those affected deserve a complete understanding of the circumstances surrounding this tragedy,” Delta Chi continued.
While it has not been officially confirmed that Delta Chi was involved, the fraternity is located at the intersection where Blas attended an event.
The 18-year-old’s family has demanded for a “complete and transparent investigation” and expressed concerns that “hazing may have played a role” according to a statement given to CBS News.
The family also called for answers as to why “911 was not called when Anthony was found unresponsive” and what happened “in the hours leading up to his death, who was present, when those present realized he was in distress, and why 911 was never contacted.”
Authorities said alcohol may have contributed to his death but stated that no evidence of foul play was found.
Delta Chi’s recognition status was revoked on April 15, 2021, through January 1, 2029 –– though the university could now uphold that ban indefinitely.
