On Tuesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Story Is,” CNN European Affairs Commentator Dominic James argued that the issues around demonstrations in France and Italy are “being obfuscated by the law and order response by the authorities” and “They’re using this as an excuse to deflect from meaningful engagement with the issues” at hand.
James said, “Well, the issues that were talked about and the issues that fueled it and provided the oxygen, the catalyst for these demonstrations are now, one could argue, being obfuscated by the law and order response by the authorities, not just in Italy, in France, but elsewhere as well. They’re using this as an excuse to deflect from meaningful engagement with the issues that the overwhelming majority of people in the streets are trying to shine a light on in French society, and for whom the rioting and the looters have, of course, been distractions, as has the police violence.”
He continued, “But focusing on that for the authorities is a strategic way to, essentially, deflect from this and to move away from a meaningful engagement.”
