Newly surfaced video captures the shocking moment a juvenile driver struck a crowd of people in a deadly Saturday-night crash that killed three people and injured multiple others in Oakland.
In the footage, the driver speeds down the road before slamming into victims and vehicles gathered on the sidewalk near a liquor store.
Witnesses said the suspect then tried to flee the scene but was stopped by bystanders before police arrived and arrested him.
The horrific crash happened just before 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of International Boulevard and 85th Avenue, according to the Oakland Fire Department.
Officials pronounced three victims dead at the scene. Three others were taken to a hospital, including two who were said to be in critical condition.
Mayor Barbara Lee issued a statement Sunday expressing gratitude to first responders and said the city was grieving the lives lost in the tragic crash.
“Our hearts are with the victims, their families, loved ones, and all of those impacted,” Lee said.
An eyewitness also recounted the horrific incident.

“He hit this blue car right here, and I guess he hit the gas and went even faster and went down the whole sidewalk and just sideswiped all those people,” according to one account of the deadly crash. “And he took off running… I saw him hit this car. I saw him coming, but there was nothing I could do. He was going too fast.”
Another witness told ABC7 it all happened suddenly.
“You heard tires screeching, then all of a sudden you heard a loud bang,” witness Michael Turner told the outlet. “When he hit the first car, it sounded like he stepped on the gas even harder. He hit the car, he stepped on the gas. You heard the engine roar, and he just took off right down the sidewalk.”
The surviving but critically injured victims were reportedly transferred to Highland Hospital.
“We’re praying for him. He’s going through surgery… It’s horrible. It’s a nightmare. It’s a nightmare for the community. These are people’s loved ones,” Shedrick Henry, one of the victim’s childhood friends, told the news station.
