Elderly e-scooter rider dies after head-on NYC collision with cyclist

An elderly man was thrown off his e-scooter and died after a head-on collision with a cyclist in downtown Brooklyn Monday, police said.

Thomas Bakas, 77, was riding his stand-up electric scooter in the bike lane on Schermerhorn Street near the Smith Street intersection around 2:20 p.m. when he smashed into a bicyclist heading the opposite direction, authorities said.

The cyclist, 47, was previously riding outside the designated bike lane and attempted to reenter it by careening between two parked, unoccupied cars — as Bakas tried to pass as well, cops said.

Police investigate the scene where an FDNY ambulance was struck by a bullet on Webster Avenue near E170th Street in the Bronx, NY, on Thursday, May 21, 2026. The bullet traveled through the entire vehicle, narrowly avoiding an EMT who was sitting in the passenger seat.

The impact caused both men, who were not wearing helmets, to fall to the ground, police said.

Bakas, who lived just blocks from the scene, was taken to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The bicyclist stayed at the scene and was neither hurt nor arrested, cops said.

The investigation was ongoing Tuesday, according to police.
