Grandma of NYC shooting victims on 4th of July makes heartwrenching plea to Mamdani: ‘This has to stop’

A grieving grandma made an emotional plea for justice Tuesday, interrupting Mayor Zohran Mamdani as he spoke of the senseless Fourth of July mass shooting in Brooklyn that left eight of her kin wounded.

A tearful Carlene Pearsall, who was herself wounded in the cowardly Coney Island attack, cut the mayor off at a vigil to honor the victims when he spoke of “the families” who were affected.

“Everybody that was shot was my blood family,” Pearsall heartbreakingly snapped. “Everybody. It’s one family. It’s not multiple families — it’s one family. It’s one entire family. This doesn’t make any sense.

“They shot our babies,” she said. “This is senseless. Our kids did not deserve that. My son is laying in a hospital bed saying, ‘Mom, what did I do to deserve this?’ Son, you did absolutely nothing.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” Pearsall sobbed. “It’s babies. It has to stop. It has to stop.”

Mamdani attended the anti-gun violence event near the scene of the Independence Day shooting, during which a masked gunman opened fire on the family as they barbecued and enjoyed fireworks.

The barrage of bullets left Pearsall’s 6-year-old grandson with a stomach wound, and three other youngsters — her 14-year-old son and 7- and 12-year-old nephews — with gunshot wounds to the legs.

Also shot were her nieces, 21 and 25, and her 33- and 37-year-old cousins.

The gunman remains on the loose.

Mamdani sought to speak on the tragedy Tuesday — and did so until Pearsall voiced her heartbreak.

“My grandson won’t eat,” she said. “He never deserved that. None of us did.”
