Horror as woman plunges from Boyle Heights bridge into the LA River sparking dramatic rescue

A woman was rescued and hoisted up to a helicopter after falling 40 feet from a bridge into a river in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon.

The fall happened on 2750 E. Washington Blvd., east of Soto Street, in Boyle Heights at around 1:24 p.m.

“First arriving fire companies found an adult woman that fell approximately 40 feet from the bridge down into the LA River. The patient is not in the water. LAFD Air Operations and Urban Search and Rescue crews are on scene,” an emergency alert from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) stated.

“LAFD paramedics have been lowered down to the patient and the patient is being medically evaluated. LAFD Air Operations is performing a hoisting operation and will be transporting the patient for further medical care at a local hospital. No firefighter injuries reported,” the LAFD further wrote.

The Department of Transportation and the Los Angeles Police Department were also requested for traffic control.

It is still unclear as to how the woman fell from the bridge.

This comes after a similar incident took place in the Pacific Palisades where an injured bicyclist in a remote area was also hoisted up by a helicopter on Friday.

It’s also not the first time someone fell from a bridge into the Los Angeles River.

A man fell from the Sixth Street Bridge and was swept more than three-quarters of a mile down the LA River before escaping the water flow, back in March 2023.

“LAFD Air Ops hoisted the patient and transported him to a nearby trauma center,” LAFD said in a statement then.
