The husband of a Texas mayor was arrested by ICE for overstaying his visa.

Armando Garza Lira, the husband of Crystal City, Texas, Mayor Jose Cerda, was arrested on Wednesday night for overstaying his visa.

According to NewsNation, the Zavala County Sheriff’s Department along with ICE took Lira into custody following complaints he was in the US illegally.

The husband of Crystal City, Texas, Mayor Jose Cerda was arrested by ICE Wednesday night, sources told NewsNation.

According to NewsNation sources, Armando Garza Lira overstayed his visa. NewsNation has reached out to the city and has not received a response.

In a statement, the Zavala County Sheriff’s Office said it took Lira into custody after conducting immigration enforcement action following complaints of an individual reportedly residing unlawfully in Crystal City, 115 miles southwest of San Antonio.

Lira was transported to the Zavala County Jail, where he was transferred to jail personnel pending further immigration enforcement action by federal authorities.

Cerda was released without further incident.

NEW: Law enforcement sources confirm that the husband of Crystal City, Texas Mayor, Jose Cerda was arrested by ICE last night– Sources say he overstayed his visa and was in the country illegally.

Zavala county sheriff’s office made the arrest in collaboration with @ICEgov:

“JOINT IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT OPERATION WITH ICE RESULTS IN DETENTION

CRYSTAL CITY, TEXAS — On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, the Zavala County Sheriff’s Office (ZCSO), in coordination with U.S. (ICE), conducted an immigration enforcement action following complaints regarding an individual reportedly residing unlawfully in Crystal City, Texas.

At approximately 7:46 PM, a Zavala County Sheriff’s Office deputy made contact with two individuals occupying a vehicle in Crystal City, Texas.

During the encounter, deputies identified one of the individuals as Armando Garza Lira.

ICE subsequently advised that Mr. Lira was unlawfully present in the United States in violation of State and Federal law.

Mr. Lira was taken into custody and transported to the Zavala County Jail, where he was transferred to jail personnel pending further immigration enforcement action by federal authorities.

The other individual identified as Jose Angel Cerda was released without further incident.”

I reached out to the mayor for comment but have not heard back.
