The knife Karmelo Anthony used to kill Austin Metcalf was a Walmart multi-tool with a serrated blade – and it sells for just $13.

Anthony’s knife came from the Walmart camping brand “Ozark Trail,” and had a 3.5-inch blade, the Collin County District attorney.

It is a 6-in-1 multitool equipped with a flashlight and glass breaker, and is “ideal for someone who hunts, camps or who travels often,” according to the Walmart listing.

The blade was more than enough to kill 17-year-old Austin – a 200-pound football player — who was left with a two-inch gash in his chest when Anthony stabbed him at an April 2025 high school track meet in Frisco, Texas.

A blade of that size is legal to carry in Texas, but was not allowed on the grounds of the Frisco school where the stabbing happened.

The knife was discarded by Anthony after he fled the scene of the stabbing, with Frisco Police Department school resource officer Jacob Shalz finding it halfway opened – a detail which Shalz testified could have been the reason why Anthony had a cut on his finger when arrested.

That detail also showed how quickly the stabbing could have happened, with Shalz even demonstrating how the knife could be opened with a single flicking motion.

Austin’s heart was pierced in the attack, and he was unconscious by the time authorities reached him.

The killing went down during a track meet at Memorial High School, where Austin and his brother confronted Anthony about sitting in his team’s tent and told him to leave.

Anthony repeatedly refused, and eventually dared Austin to “touch me and find out.”

Austin then shoved Anthony, who whipped out the blade and stabbed.

The killing landed Anthony with a first-degree murder conviction Tuesday, and a 35-year prison sentence.
