Moment California mass stabber starts slashing victims in terrifying 30-minute rampage

This is the horrifying moment a mass stabber started his violent spree as he is caught on camera approaching a woman before slashing her multiple times with a blade.

In the daylight footage, a man in a white tank top can be seen approaching his first victim, who tries to back away before he suddenly begins stabbing her repeatedly.

The attack, in the Cesar Chavez Park area of Oakland, killed 58-year-old Gonzalo Lopez and left two women and two other men injured over 30 minutes around 7.30pm Monday night.

The string of attacks quickly spread across East Oakland, with BART officers alerting city police to another stabbing near the Fruitvale BART station.

The victims were discovered near 39th Avenue and International Boulevard. The five victims were found across four separate locations during the roughly half-hour spree.

As officers searched for the attacker, members of the community helped direct police toward the suspect near the 1500 block of 39th Avenue shortly before 8 p.m.

Officers pursued the suspect on foot before ordering the person to drop the knife. Police then took the suspect into custody without further violence and recovered a weapon believed to be connected to the attacks.

Authorities believe the suspect, a homeless man who was arrested Monday night and has not yet been named, acted alone in all five attacks. At least two of the victims were also homeless.

Detectives are still trying to understand what led to the deadly attacks. On Tuesday, police said the victims seemed to have been chosen at random and noted that the department has not seen a multi-victim assault like this in recent years.
