Mountain lion spotted prowling in San Francisco yards as officials issue warning to neighbors

A mountain lion was spotted in San Francisco Friday morning, prompting local officials to issue a warning to residents.

One video of the big cat posted on X shows it wandering behind bushes in the yards of multiple homes, with a window above the animal slightly open.

Another video showed the mountain lion crouched low behind a bush. The person who shared the clip said that Animal Care & Control was at the scene.

Both sightings were in the area of 44th Avenue and Ulloa Street in the Outer Sunset neighborhood.

Officials eventually captured the cat Friday morning and placed it in the care of California Department of Fish and Wildlife game wardens.

“The incident has been resolved, there is no danger to the public,” the update said, according to KRON4.

Authorities previously advised residents not to run if they encounter the mountain lion, but instead to slowly back away.

“If a mountain lion approaches — make yourself ‘big,’ wave your arms, shout, throw something, and again, do not run,” authorities said.

Earlier this month, a mountain lion was spotted in the city’s Panhandle neighborhood.

The predator was hiding in a tree near Fell and Baker streets when the city’s animal control officers arrived at the scene on Sept. 5 near Golden Gate Park.

A person walking a dog had first noticed the mountain lion climbing a tree with dense foliage, making it easier for the animal to hide among the leaves.

Officials later launched a drone and illuminated the tree canopy in an effort to locate the mountain lion, but did not see it.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Krysten Kellum confirmed that wardens never spotted the animal, suggesting it may have already left the area before team members arrived, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
