Pileup on 5 Freeway in Los Angeles sparks rush hour chaos Thursday

A catastrophic crash involving an Amazon truck and three other vehicles sparked rush hour chaos on the 5 Freeway in California.

The smash blocked several southbound lanes near Norwalk around 4:30 a.m., but the California Highway Police did not issue a Sig Alert.

The collision happened just after midnight and involved the Amazon big rig, a cargo van, and two other vehicles.

It’s unclear how the crash transpired, but video at the scene showed the cargo van on its side with heavy damage and debris scattered across the highway. The Amazon truck had some damage to its front cab with a shattered windshield.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Fe Springs Station and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the scene, according to the video stringer. Officers were seen inspecting the debris.

Tow trucks were called to the scene to move some of the vehicles, and officials cleared debris. There was still traffic in the area around 7 a.m. on Thursday.

At least one person died from the collision, according to ABC 7. The condition of the other drivers is unclear.

The crash is still under investigation.

Norwalk is a city in Los Angeles County, about 15 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
