Santa Paula Punch Bowls turn into hell as mass crowds descend on California cove

A stunning natural swimming hole tucked deep in a Southern California canyon has been overrun by massive crowds, with shocking video showing visitors packed across the once-secluded beauty spot.

Footage posted to Instagram shows scores of people swarming the Santa Paula Punch Bowls in Ventura County, lined up across the granite rocks and crowding around the natural pools.

The camera pans across the packed scene before turning to a woman, who stares in disbelief after making the grueling five-mile hike to reach the popular swimming spot.

“When you make it to the punch bowls after hiking 5 miles and they are genuinely more crowded than Disneyland,” the video’s caption reads.

“We think this has gone way too far…. Santa Paula punch bowls,” the account added in the post’s caption.

The footage sparked outrage from Instagram users who blamed social media for transforming the once-hidden gem into a tourist magnet.

“Perfect example as to why I say. Social media kills hidden gems. This should have stayed a locals-only spot. That’s crazy,” one person wrote.

Another claimed that volunteers had removed hundreds of pounds of garbage from the area just days earlier.

“This is absolutely ridiculous; we just cleaned up this last Saturday. We picked up over 250+ lbs of trash,” the user wrote.

“I blame the locals for not gatekeeping hard enough,” another commenter quipped.

The Punch Bowls—located in Santa Paula Canyon in Los Padres National Forest—have become much more popular as social media videos show people cliff-jumping, swimming, and sliding down a granite chute into the pools below.

But the destination has also earned a reputation as one of Ventura County’s most dangerous outdoor attractions.

Earlier this month, stomach-churning footage captured a woman losing control while racing down the natural waterslide and repeatedly slamming into jagged rocks before landing in the pool below.

Authorities have repeatedly warned visitors about the dangers of the area, where wet granite can become extremely slick and submerged rocks, swift-moving water, steep cliffs and rugged terrain have contributed to serious accidents.

The remote canyon also complicates rescue efforts, with injured hikers and swimmers frequently requiring helicopter evacuations.

Despite repeated warnings about cliff jumping and sliding down the granite chute, viral videos continue to draw thrill-seekers to the secluded canyon.
