WASHINGTON — Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) is expected to make a “full recovery” after suffering a stroke at his son’s hockey game, but “will miss the next several weeks of votes,” according to his doctor and congressional office.

Dr. Jose Suarez, chief of Neurosciences Critical Care at Johns Hopkins Hospital, said in a statement that despite a “small hemorrhagic stroke,” Murphy has “shown tremendous progress, and at the current rate of improvement, we expect that he will make a full recovery following rehabilitation.”

The liberal Connecticut Democrat had been treated at Johns Hopkins since the Nov. 1 incident caused him to feel numbness in his left arm, prompting him to call 9-1-1.

“Thank you for the outpouring of support my family and I have received over the last few days. I want to be direct with you, so here is my diagnosis,” Murphy said Friday. “I was diagnosed with a small bleed in the thalamus region of my brain.”

“The doctors are very encouraged by the progress I’ve made so far,” he added. “In order to take my recovery seriously and get back to work on the quickest timeline possible, I will be spending several weeks at a rehabilitation center after being discharged from the hospital today.”

“This has been a scary experience for me and my family, and I appreciate the continued respect for our privacy,” he also said. “As I’m working towards a full recovery, I am staying engaged with my team and colleagues remotely, and my staff continues to carry out our legislative priorities, serve constituents, and ensure the work of my office continues uninterrupted.”

The Democratic senator also extended his “deepest thanks to the excellent doctors and staff at Johns Hopkins who have treated me and cared for my family.”

A suspected 2028 presidential contender, Murphy had been traveling to critical battleground states to support Democratic candidates in the midterms elections.

He isn’t up for reelection himself until 2030.

Murphy, 53, shares two teenage sons with his ex-wife Cathy Holahan, an attorney.

The couple divorced last July, nearly two years after going public with their split in the wake of the 2024 election.

The Post revealed that Murphy was dating Democratic digital strategist Tara McGowan months later in March 2025.
