A Palmdale mom of two was killed after a Los Angeles Police Department patrol car responding to an emergency call at a Halloween party in the San Fernando Valley fatally struck her last week.

Kristine Poulos, 32, was hit by the patrol car around 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 31 near Woodman Avenue and Bessemer Street in Valley Glen, and died at the scene.

The patrol car from LAPD’s North Hollywood Division was heading to provide backup at a Halloween house party on Weddington Street in Sherman Oaks.

Fernando Castro, a realtor based on the West Coast who identified himself as the victim’s elder brother, said that Poulos leaves behind two young daughters “who now have to grow up without their mother.”

“Like many families, we’ve had our ups and downs, and life hasn’t always been easy. But no matter the distance or circumstances, family is family, and nobody deserves to have their life end this way,” Castro said in an emotional Facebook post Sunday morning.

He added that his heart goes out to his nieces because they have to live a life without their parents. “With their father not in the picture, these girls have already faced challenges that no child should have to endure,” said Castro.

One of Poulos’ daughters, Naomi Portillo, set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for her mother’s funeral and burial.

“Kristine was crossing the street when she was struck by an LAPD police car. She was only 32 years old, and losing her this way has been devastating for our family,” Portillo wrote in the statement posted on the fundraising page.

Portillo said that nobody deserves to die the way her mother did: “This loss has deeply hurt me, my sister, and my mother’s sister. … We are still trying to process the pain of what happened,” she added.
