President Trump slammed Wall Street short sellers betting against the stock market at a lunch event in the White House Rose Garden this afternoon, highlighting his record stock market.
“Those poor bastards,” he said. “I never liked short guys, because they’re betting against the country. So, that’s okay.”
The comment came while Trump was touting his new Trump Accounts program and his 81 record highs in the stock market since taking office last year.
Earlier this morning, Trump spoke in the Oval Office alongside Dell CEO Michael Dell and his wife, Susan, to officially launch his Trump Accounts program, which provides a tax-advantaged investment account for children.
Senator Ted Cruz, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, and leaders from the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq were also in attendance for a first-of-its-kind joint opening bell ceremony.
Michael and Susan Dell pledged a $6 billion donation to the Trump accounts, which provide a $1,000 federal pilot contribution to children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, as well as additional benefits for children born in low-income areas. Children born in regions with median incomes below $150,000 could be eligible for an additional $250 deposit from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation.
During the event this morning, Trump rang the stock market opening bell for the first time ever from the Oval Office.
Scott Bessent introduced the President and Trump Accounts, telling reporters that Trump is creating an “ownership economy” through the program, with already 6 million children signed up. “1.4 million of those accounts will receive $1000 from the US Treasury to seed those accounts,” Bessent said before Trump interrupted him to ring the opening bell.
“You better speak a little faster,” Trump said as the markets opened.

“We’re riding the hottest stock market in history. 81 days, I’ve been here one and a half years. Think of it, 81 days we hit record highs, including today,” Trump said. “A lot of you Wall Street guys, I see Larry, and I see some of the biggest guys in Wall Street, David, Goldman Sachs, Blackstone, Black Rock, they’re all here, and think of it, I’m making them all geniuses, every one of us are geniuses.”
“Anybody doing poorly?” Trump then asked the crowd.
If you are, I guess you have a couple of guys that went short, those poor bastards! I mean, they are in big trouble. They’re being wiped out, the short guys,” Trump continued, laughing.
“I never liked short guys, because they’re betting against the country. So, that’s okay.”
