US Marine recruit dies after routine test at Camp Pendleton

A US Marine Corps recruit has died during a routine physical fitness evaluation at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County.

Officials said the victim experienced a medical emergency on Aug. 1 while doing the scheduled evaluation at the sprawling military facility.

They were rushed to the Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside. The recruit was pronounced dead four days later on Aug. 5.

The soldier’s identity is unknown, and the circumstances of their death are still under investigation, as officials conduct a medical review.

The Marine Corps cited the recruit’s privacy in withholding his identity until 24 hours after the family is notified.

“We are committed to providing privacy and support to the recruit’s family, and no further details will be released at this time,” the Marine Corps said in a statement.

More information will be released at a later time, officials said.

Camp Pendleton is about 40 miles north of San Diego in Oceanside.
