Democratic Socialist DC City Councilwoman Janeese Lewis George declared victory in the seven-way primary to replace Mayor Muriel Bowser for DC Mayor on Tuesday.
Bowser is retiring at the end of her third term in office.
Lewis George delivered a victory speech hours after the polls closed on Tuesday night, where she vowed to “stand up to Trump.”
“As mayor, I will work with anyone who makes DC safer. But I will also stand up to Trump and anyone who targets our neighbors,” she said.
Lewis George held a double-digit lead when counting stopped last night. Ballot counting is expected to continue slowly as DC uses ranked choice voting for the first time.

If Lewis George can maintain her 50% lead, she will win the election outright with no runoff race.
President Trump threatened last week to invoke the DC Home Rule Act again if Lewis George won the race.
Asked how he would feel if the Democratic Socialist won her race, Trump said, “I wouldn’t like it.” He continued, “Maybe we’ll take back Washington, run it on a federal basis. We won’t put up with it. We’re not going to lose our businesses.”
Trump previously signed an executive order declaring a “crime emergency” and invoking powers under section 740 of the Home Rule Act to federalize the police last Summer. He also deployed hundreds of federal agents and National Guard troops across the capital.
