President Trump on Wednesday threatened Canada and the European Union with “very heavy tariffs” or an end to all trade amid the EU’s plans to welcome Canada as a member.
The move could extend Trump’s trade war with Canada to the EU. Trump has slapped 50% tariffs on Canadian goods and plans to ban some Canadian industries from importing to the US.
“I think it’s laughable … Canada has been a terrible trade partner,” Trump told reporters on the tarmac at Charlotte airport on Wednesday.
“If they do that, and if I think it’s at all a hostile act, I will put very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many things,” he added.
“So, if they do that, if Europe does that with a bad intention— if it’s a good intention, that’s fine. If it’s a bad intention, we’ll put very heavy tariffs on Europe.”
WATCH:
As The Gateway Pundit reported, Liberal Canadian PM Mark Carney, after starting a trade war with Trump, went out on a frantic mission to approach the European Union as an alternative.
EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday made an offer to make Canada the EU’s first “associate member.”
However, some EU members were furious about von der Leyen’s announcement and made up associate membership status.
