When Aaron Rai saw his curling 68-foot putt disappear into the cup on the 17th green late Sunday afternoon at Aronimink Golf Club to lock down the 108th PGA Championship, the crowds packed around the hole went wild.

Rai, however, did not.

There were no fist pumps or guttural screams to the sky. There, in fact, were no emotional histrionics to celebrate the moment — his moment — whatsoever.

As I watched the scene unfold, my initial thought was that Rai’s lack of reaction was due to him being in a state of shock — that the putt he wasn’t even trying to make went in and that his professional life was changing before his eyes.
