Alex de Minaur opened up about the impact of his most recent loss on his mental health.

No. 9 seed Flavio Cobolli upset fifth-seeded de Minaur in Wimbledon’s fourth round 7-5, 7-6 (4), 6-3, ending one of the Aussie’s best chances to reach his first career Grand Slam semifinal.

De Minaur has reached the quarters at every major tournament.

“I’m broken inside. That’s the reality. You invest so many hours into this job and so many years to have moments like these,” de Minaur said in his post-match presser.

“I won’t be playing a tournament for a while. But then again, they keep piling up. The goals, the belief, the dreams you have start fading away or feeling a little bit further out of reach than they once were.

“I feel like a couple years ago I was definitely closer. Now I just feel like I’m drifting a little further away from those dreams. It’s getting harder and harder. That’s the reality.”

De Minaur led the second set 5-2 before Cobolli made a roaring comeback to take a 2-0 set lead.

Cobolli is into his second straight Wimbledon quarterfinal. He made his first career major final just last month at the French Open where Alexander Zverev defeated him in five sets.

Todd Woodbridge, one of the commentators for the match, criticized de Minaur’s seemingly lacking aggression during the match. He also discussed de Minaur’s struggles in his service game. De Minaur only made half of his first serves over the course of the match.

“He’s not taking on the match at the moment,” Woodbridge said on the BBC broadcast.

De Minaur’s best result at a major this year came at the Australian Open, where he reached his second career quarterfinal in Melbourne and fell to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.
