Ashton Jeanty’s road back to full strength took an uncertain turn Thursday, when the Raiders running back was listed as a limited practice participant with foot and ankle injuries.

Jeanty appeared on Wednesday’s injury report but participated fully, making Thursday’s reduced workload a development worth monitoring as the 3-1 Raiders prepare to visit the Patriots on Sunday.

What remains unclear is whether the change reflects increased discomfort, a setback or simply a decision to manage his workload ahead of the game. The participation designation alone does not establish that either injury has worsened.

But it adds another question to a situation the Raiders have been navigating since before the season began.

Jeanty suffered the ankle injury in the weeks leading up to the opener and has continued playing through signs of discomfort. At various points during games, he has gotten up from the ground grimacing, reminders that being available and being fully healthy are not necessarily the same thing.

He has continued taking handoffs, catching passes and handling the physical demands of a prominent role in the offense. Still, his availability has not erased the questions about how close he is to feeling like himself.

Jeanty recently alluded to that distinction, indicating that he was improving but had not quite reached 100%. His hope was to get there soon.

Thursday’s report introduces some uncertainty into that progress.

If Jeanty is unable to play on Sunday, the Raiders have rookie Mike Washington Jr. waiting in the wings. The speedy back from Arkansas has been a pleasant surprise this year and has been a formidable offset to Jeanty as the club’s RB2.

The question is, can Washington go from a being limited contributor to a leading man?

The Raiders still have a few days to even think about that, though.

A reduction from full to limited participation could mean the Raiders are taking a cautious approach with a player who has been absorbing contact while recovering. It could also reflect an issue that became more troublesome between practices.

Without further clarification, neither explanation should be treated as established fact.

The addition of the foot designation alongside the ankle issue also warrants attention, although the report does not explain whether the two are related or how either affected Thursday’s workload.

For the Raiders, the timing is hardly ideal.

They are trying to establish more consistency in their running game while preparing to rebound from their first loss of the season. A healthier Jeanty would be an important part of that effort, giving the offense a better chance to turn its rushing opportunities into productive gains.

His condition cannot explain every problem on the ground. Blocking, timing and execution remain part of the equation. But having their featured running back operating below full strength is another complication as the Raiders search for answers.

The immediate question is whether Thursday represents a temporary adjustment or the beginning of a more concerning trend.

Friday’s participation report and any game-status designation should provide a clearer picture of his availability against New England. Further comments from Jeanty or coach Klint Kubiak could also help explain the reason for Thursday’s change.

For now, the distinction matters: Jeanty was limited, not sidelined, and that does not automatically put Sunday’s game in jeopardy.

It does, however, make his health a more pressing storyline.

Jeanty has been hoping to put the lingering discomfort behind him. The Raiders must now determine how much to ask of him while that process continues.
