Baker Mayfield is known for being a tough quarterback. But perhaps he was a bit too tough in 2025.
On Netflix’s “Quarterback” series, the Buccaneers veteran revealed that he fought through multiple injuries last season as his play steadily declined throughout the year.
Mayfield admitted he fought through a sprained MCL and PCL from Week 2 onward and battled through a biceps contusion that he said impacted his throwing velocity.
He also suffered a shoulder injury in a Week 10 loss against the Rams.
Fox Sports’ Greg Auman reported Mayfield was on the injury report 10 times last season, but he still didn’t miss any time.
Auman also reported that the veteran had eight different injuries listed, but missed just two practices.
Mayfield’s 2025 was a tale of two halves.
From Week 1 to Week 8, he looked like an MVP candidate, guiding the Buccaneers to a 6-2 start while throwing 13 touchdowns to just three interceptions.
But everything went downhill after the Buccaneers bye week.
The team limped to a 2-7 finish and ended the year 8-9 while missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019 even in a weak NFC South.
Mayfield was at the forefront of the Buccaneers’ collapse, throwing nine interceptions in their final nine games with inconsistent accuracy.
On “The Arena” podcast in April, former Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David discussed Mayfield’s trying 2025 season.
“Man, Baker was going through a lot, bro,” David said. “Baker had a lot of injuries that you didn’t expect a quarterback to play through. You know what I’m saying?”
Mayfield’s rocky 2025 campaign came just a year after he had a career-best 2024, where he threw 41 touchdowns and completed 71.4 percent of his passes.
Through three years with the Buccaneers, Mayfield has made the playoffs twice and tossed 95 touchdowns.
The 31-year-old is in the final year of the three-year extension he signed in 2024, but has yet to sign a new deal.
