The junior varsity portion of the Mets schedule is finally over now, and it turns out maybe what the Mets needed was a bigger challenge.

The big boys on the calendar started arriving Friday night with the first-place, archnemesis Braves in town, and the Mets looked better than they had for almost all of the first 68 games in the soft part of their schedule.

Maybe the Mets were bored by the Angels and the Rockies and the Marlins and all those also-rans that mostly comprised the first 42 percent of their slate of games.

Maybe the last-place Mets are really as dead as they looked before. But maybe, just maybe, this is their chance to show there’s more there.
