Broncos star Jonathon Cooper broke his silence after Friday’s domestic violence arrest with a bible verse he posted on social media.
Cooper, 28, was held overnight on two counts of domestic violence and one count of misdemeanor criminal mischief after an alleged fight between Cooper and his longtime girlfriend Jade Fiegen.
“Do not let your anger lead you into sin, and do not let the sun go down on your anger,” Cooper posted on social media, quoting Ephesians 4:26.
The Broncos outside linebacker, who had eight sacks last season, also issued an apology.
“I realize posting a Bible. (sic) Quote right after something very serious happens does not just mean everything is okay,” Cooper posted. “I apologize to my family, to my friends, and my community. And so many others.”
Fiegen was also arrested in the domestic violence incident.
Fiegen accused Cooper of cheating, according to the affidavit.
The woman claimed to have taken his phone and thrown it, while Cooper said that he grabbed his girlfriend’s upper arms to get his phone.
Cooper added that he “braced his neck against her neck to prevent her from getting the phone.”
Fiegen alleges that Cooper picked her up and threw her to the ground three times. She also claims that Cooper proceeded to punch the wall next to her face.
Fiegen appeared to have minor injuries, including a small mark on her neck, a cut on her hand and scratches on her arm, although the officers said that the markings did not appear consistent with what Fiegen alleged Cooper did to her.
“We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club,” the NFL said in a statement.
The Broncos issued a similar statement, adding they are “aware of the matter and are gathering more information.”
