Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s wife was shot Sunday night and has been hospitalized, according to ESPN.
Mia Bieniemy, 57, was shot at the couple’s Virginia home while Eric was with the Chiefs at training camp in St. Joseph, Mo., according to the report.
Loudoun County cops told ESPN a person was being treated for “serious injuries,” though the identity of the person wasn’t confirmed.
Mia is reportedly in stable condition, per ESPN Chiefs reporter Nate Taylor, and Bieniemy left the Chiefs and did not attend Monday’s training camp practice to support his wife.
The Chiefs are “aware of an incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,” the team said in a statement to ESPN.
Earlier this year, the Chiefs brought back Bieniemy after three years away from the team. He spent last season as the running backs coach for the Bears among Ben Johnson’s staff.
In 2023, he left Kansas City to take on the offensive coordinator role with the Commanders, who went 4-13 with Sam Howell under center. Following that, he briefly had a college football coaching stint at UCLA for a year.
The long-time coordinator has yet to receive a head coach gig in the NFL.
If there was a time, it was expected after the 2022 season when Bieniemy had proved himself following five successful season in Kansas City including two Super Bowl wins in ’19 and ’22.
Following a 6-11, playoff-less season, the Chiefs parted ways with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and turned toward the familiar face for the role.
“I can’t wait to see him back in the building, man,” Kelce said of Bieniemy in January. “He’s one of my favorite coaches of all-time, one of my favorite people of all time. I’ve had so many unbelievable growing moments under him as a player, as a person, and I just love the guy. And it’s gonna be awesome to see him back in the building and see him back wearing the Chiefs logo, baby.”
