When mom’s away, dad and the kids will play.
That’s how I ended up taking my two kids to the New Jersey Devils‘ 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Prudential Center on Saturday, Oct. 24.
As a hopeful hockey dad, I want to expose my little ones to the game as much as possible — while doing so in an easy-to-handle-while-solo venture, especially for their first NHL experience.
The Devils provided that and so much more in an experience I can’t recommend enough to parents looking to do the same, or those who just want to switch it up from the usual weekend routine.
Here’s what to know, should you go.
What’s it like buying tickets for a Devils game?
A few days before the game, I started looking into finding the perfect seats. Prices ranged anywhere from $200 per for the lower bowl to around $20 for the balcony.
I was wowed when I noticed options on verified ticket reseller Vivid Seats that allow you to add in perks like parking, food packages and front-row experiences. It’s a one-stop shop for figuring out how to get in Prudential’s doors for your own price point.
Is parking a hassle at Prudential Center?
Just an hour-ish drive from Westchester, I was impressed by just how much arena-adjacent parking was available upon arrival. If your ticket purchase didn’t include parking, there are plenty of game day options literally around the corner.
Don’t have a car? No worries. NJ transit will bring you to within two blocks (only a 5-10 minute walk!) from the Devils home.
What is the experience like inside Prudential Center?
Although I held up the security line by forgetting I was wearing a belt while walking through the metal detectors (shout out to the patient security team), entry was otherwise smooth. The digital ticket process via the Devils/Prudential Center app couldn’t have been easier, with arena staff on hand to help out with questions or issues.
Once we got in, everyone got a quick and excited taste of the gameday experience. People were bustling around, excited to get a glimpse of Jack Hughes and Co.
Food and bathrooms — including the all-important family restroom — were plentiful and easy to find. Our seats were easy to get to with ushers excited to point us in the right direction at every turn.
How is the food for kids?
The kids’ first demand? Soft pretzels. We found them easily.
For a more substantial meal, Prudential Center offers concession staples: burgers, hot dogs, barbecue, pizza, tacos, chicken tenders, popcorn, ice cream and snacks galore.
There are even kosher options and grab-and-go stations everywhere.
A big thing to note: it’s a cashless venue.
Are there any activities at the arena?
After a pretzel, our first order of business was to find everything Prudential Center had to offer. On this Saturday, that included a glitter tattoo station to make sure everyone could show off their Devils pride.
We also went on a hunt for the mascot, NJ Devil. We played along with crowd games on the video scoreboard. We sang Bon Jovi.
And, most importantly, we watched the Devils beat the Kings in a game that was fast, fun, and — “not even for a single second,” my six-year-old told me — boring.
