Jaxson Dart couldn’t stop crying.
He didn’t want to leave home. He didn’t want to change schools before his senior year of high school. He didn’t want to abandon his team.
But an opportunity was interpreted as an obligation.
Dart first took the reins at Roy High School in suburban Salt Lake City as a 5-foot-11, 170-pound freshman, who beat out a senior transfer expecting to be handed the job. His coach, Fred Fernandes, had seen similarly well-founded swagger decades earlier, as the former teammate of a future Super Bowl champion (Jim McMahon).
