After starting the season 3-0, the Las Vegas Raiders have found themselves as losers in their last four games, and quarterback Kirk Cousins is aware of the pressure.
Following Sunday’s loss, head coach Klint Kubiak was asked if the team could start Fernando Mendoza, to which he replied, “At this point we’re thinking about everything.”
After Kubiak was asked about the rookie, Cousins was asked about Mendoza potentially taking over.
“It’s really the same every day as it was in March or April. Nothing changes in the sense that if I’m not the best option, then I don’t want to be out there either,” Cousins said.
In Sunday’s 35-21 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Cousins went 26 of 44 for 295 yards, with two touchdowns.
While the stat line suggests that Cousins played well, a lot of his success happened in the second half, and when the Rams were playing a soft zone against them.
At the end of the first half, the Raiders were down 28-6 and Cousins was seven of 12 for 39 yards.
The Raiders didn’t score their first touchdown until the fourth quarter, when Cousins connected with Tre Tucker for a 37-yard touchdown reception.
When Cousins signed with the Raiders as a free agent this offseason, he knew that Mendoza was going to be his successor and the long-term answer at quarterback.
“The organization will do what they feel is best,” Cousins said. “But I feel that Fernando has done a great job and has a bright future ahead.”
While Cousins doesn’t know what the Raiders’ next move will be, he said he plans to do everything he can to help Las Vegas win.
“I’m gonna go out there and try and play as well as I possibly can, help us win, and give him a great example to learn from, until he does go out there,” Cousins said.
