The Mets could have fallen into oblivion on their last road trip after losing the first two games in Seattle last week.

And yet, they recovered to win three of four games, bringing at least a measure of optimism to Citi Field as they prepare for the Cardinals and Braves on this homestand. The Mets (29-36) are somehow only five games behind the third wild-card spot in a muddled National League, behind the division leaders.

A look at four questions facing the team as the Mets ponder the looming buy/sell question before the trade deadline:

What is the state of the starting rotation?

The Mets will need a fifth starter no later than Saturday. The options this turn through the rotation won’t include Kodai Senga, who is scheduled to pitch for Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday. Team officials want results from the rehabbing right-hander, who has struggled with control.
