Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson is managing “a lot of challenges” while being away from the team with an illness, according to ESPN insider Mike Reiss.
During a Thursday appearance on the “Toucher & Hardy” podcast on 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, the longtime Pats reporter explained that the 24-year-old Henderson has been going through adversity this year in his life and career.
“My view from being around the team this year has had a lot of adversity for him,” Reiss said. “He had the ankle injury [during the preseason] that he didn’t play in Week 1 [New England’s 13-10 loss to Seattle]. Then [he] had another ankle injury [sustained in the Patriots’ Oct. 11 victory over the Raiders] and he came back faster than many had thought.”

“I think the limited play time, add all of that up, I think there has been a lot of challenges for him maybe that he hasn’t faced in his young life and career. To me, that all might be tied to what he is managing.”
Henderson did not practice Wednesday due to an illness — after he missed the Patriots’ win over the Dolphins in Week 8 for the same excuse. He did not travel to Miami with the team.
It’s unclear if he’ll be available to play in the Patriots’ home game against the Packers on Sunday.
New England veteran running back Rhamondre Stevenson is the starter and takes on a bigger workload with Henderson sidelined.

Henderson shared an emotional message about his faith in an Instagram post on Oct. 25.
“‘In life, I struggle, I suffer, I’m tempted, I’m tested, sometimes I feel so weak,” he wrote, including a photo of him in his Patriots uniform.” But when I am weak, I am strong. Because Christ, He is my hope, He is my strength, He is a firm foundation that never fails. Jesus is worthy of it all. May He be glorified always, not just on the mountain tops, but even in the valleys.’
“’Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.’ Psalms 62:5, 8.”
Henderson, a second-round pick by the Patriots in the 2025 NFL draft, has struggled in his second season.
He only had three carries for nine yards while playing 13 offensive snaps in the Patriots’ 30-24 loss to the Bears on Oct. 11.
Across six games played this season, Henderson has 52 carries for 203 yards and 1 touchdown, plus 5 receptions for 45 yards.
