The Mets’ big Andy Green question — and who to watch in managerial search

Mets baseball president David Stearns announced that interim manager Andy Green will return to the front office following the season and a managerial search will commence. But I’m not completely convinced.

I believe Stearns believes that’s what he will do. But things change. Things changed with Carlos Mendoza. Things can change with Green.

Others within the Mets hierarchy use less certain words like “expectation” and “plan” regarding Green resuming farm directing duties. What if Green does a terrific job? I know that won’t be easy — 14 Mets have a 0.0 WAR or worse — but with pressure reduced, maybe they’re better.

Green was an MLB manager (from 2016-19 with the Padres), which should be close to a requirement for the most difficult job in sports. Plus, he has a strong rapport with Stearns and fits the lower-key, lower-profile persona many young leaders prefer. Some insiders guess Stearns might shy away from a big presence like Albert Pujols and maybe even Alex Cora. Recall Stearns never seriously considered a Buck Showalter return.
