Troy Aikman is one of many UCLA Bruins alumni who is stoked about the football team’s undefeated 8-0 record this season.
Aikman is less stoked about his alma mater’s mediocre attendance at home games this season, which was made apparent during No. 8-ranked UCLA’s 27-0 win over Nevada last weekend.
UCLA’s iconic Rose Bowl Stadium can fit 90,888, but only 24,611 were present for the Bruins’ eighth win against Nevada. Aikman admitted this irked him during an appearance on Dallas’ 96.7 “The Ticket” show on Thursday.
“Little embarrassing that we were 7-0 going into last week’s game and, they shoot it pretty low [on TV] so you can’t really tell when you’re watching the game — I’m told there was about 20-25,000 people at the game,” Aikman said, per Awful Announcing.
“So when you have a stadium at the Rose Bowl that holds over 100,000, 25,000, it may as well be empty as opposed to some other stadiums that maybe hold 40,000,” he added.
“We’ve got to get people going to games, we’ve got to get them excited about it. And then you say, ‘Well, how do you get them excited? If 7-0 doesn’t get them excited, what will?’ I don’t know the answer to that.”
24,611 is a respectable amount of fans, which Aikman alluded to.
But the Rose Bowl Stadium makes 24,611 look minuscule, especially for one of the country’s best college football teams.
Nevertheless, the Bruins will continue pushing forward. They play at Minnesota in a tricky Big Ten matchup on Saturday morning before returning home to face Illinois.
