INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Coaches across the WNBA spoke to members of the press this week and admitted that they had no idea what the “W” in WNBA stands for.
“We’ve tried to take our best guess, but we’re totally stumped,” said Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White. “Whale? Watch? Wind? There’s just no way to know. In fact, we suspect it might just be one of those things that literally can’t be known.”
The confusion came after coaches were asked if they support recent comments by players expressing concern over the trend of men playing in women’s sports leagues.
“We’re not biologists,” White said. “Nor do we know what words mean. So that ‘W’ could stand for just about anything. We’re inclusive here at the WNBA; we don’t want anyone to feel left out. Wombats… wallabies… Wu Tang Clan… everyone can play here.”
The coach doubled down on the confusion, giving a list of more potential things the “W” might represent. “Witch. Walter White. Wakanda… whatever it is. Maybe it’s literally ‘Whatever.'”
At publishing time, most people admitted that they were unaware there was a WNBA.
