The earthquake was located about 6 miles north of Lake Pillsbury with a depth of about 6.5 miles, shaking the earth just after 5 a.m.
At least five people felt the shake of the quake, according to the USGS “Did you Feel It?” poll.
The most affected areas of the quake were within the Mendocino National Forest and away from any population centers.
USGS gave the quake a 14% chance of causing an aftershock of at least magnitude 3 and a 2% chance of causing at least a 4.0-magnitude earthquake within a week.
No injuries have been reported.
The new earthquake is the most powerful since a 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook the ocean floor about 100 kilometers west of Petrolia.
Lake Pillsbury is located about 18 miles northeast of Potter Valley.
